I don't know why but it is the contrast of metal to mend something fragile, I think. And it's the fact that we didn't always live in this 'throw away' society; things were treasured, mended and used again and again. Before adhesives were widely used people would save any broken china for when repairers would visit towns and villages to perform this quite tricky operation. Nowadays we throw it in the bin and go on the internet to order another one to be delivered the next day!<br />
<br />
Tiny holes were drilled on either side of a cracked surface and hand forged metal staples or rivets were inserted to hold each piece together.<br />
<br />
These are some of the few pieces I have found that have had this repair done. Of course, many have been destroyed over the years because the 'crude' repairs have been considered unsightly. I, personally, think they add more character and certainly authenticize the age of a piece.<br />

I can understand why someone would want a Harrods tea set repaired but even this rather utilitarian glass jug has had the rivetting treatment.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDdIrOueakydawUouERObHmxMzUovVmYnIiJ5PEajp0qGESiss5rDFFNFU_4rvhojaTCzyeaONKc1BMw0h-3jmEB1BmxWfEbQa2NHhXdDnFIwt9D8p3_-9ckuyT329fFj8xnOenUZXMotv/s1600/IMG_7536.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDdIrOueakydawUouERObHmxMzUovVmYnIiJ5PEajp0qGESiss5rDFFNFU_4rvhojaTCzyeaONKc1BMw0h-3jmEB1BmxWfEbQa2NHhXdDnFIwt9D8p3_-9ckuyT329fFj8xnOenUZXMotv/s640/IMG_7536.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I have been revamping my sewing room recently and decided to make a new notice board to co-ordinate with the red and grey decoration. I have covered a notice board with grey and white ticking fabric and added some 'Oh So Vintage' name tape I already had.<br />
<br />
If you would also like to make one, it is really simple.....<br />
<br />
You will need<br />
Memo board (I used a cork board from Ikea)<br />
Fabric<br />
Polyester wadding (the sort that you place inside curtains for extra thickness)<br />
Stapler (the sort that will insert staples onto a flat surface, not a paper stapler)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
5 Buttons<br />
String or cord<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1BWZwtz8OtNkvhqBL4P7bSpMQ_1mtnF04iNlqSjUyS04s4b3JBZZHDDZP7keXu5JUhj9BkaPsT3eF_ZHKXYjYqs8rbTDmO1ptbsRw5lDjilZv1LJ3FfX1oTJzDxgBvw_jmX5Sn_08LdKL/s1600/IMG_7523-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1BWZwtz8OtNkvhqBL4P7bSpMQ_1mtnF04iNlqSjUyS04s4b3JBZZHDDZP7keXu5JUhj9BkaPsT3eF_ZHKXYjYqs8rbTDmO1ptbsRw5lDjilZv1LJ3FfX1oTJzDxgBvw_jmX5Sn_08LdKL/s320/IMG_7523-001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD6L4uoN1eLfAsZ3vkbVHW-76RfnCTn8mlv5-ZdbplPNaNFPh502s7NXjxvqayYdYkRmOMekiyjJ1hjOa7VnxFbR6_XwDN6HQm_QfxfbQx1JRQo4MKh58kO_2M-9eq4ly0iyYfiaaEvMQB/s1600/IMG_7522.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD6L4uoN1eLfAsZ3vkbVHW-76RfnCTn8mlv5-ZdbplPNaNFPh502s7NXjxvqayYdYkRmOMekiyjJ1hjOa7VnxFbR6_XwDN6HQm_QfxfbQx1JRQo4MKh58kO_2M-9eq4ly0iyYfiaaEvMQB/s400/IMG_7522.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Cover the memo board with the wadding leaving about 2 cms to fold over onto the wrong side. Staple this to the wooden frame of the board.<br />
<br />
Do the same with your fabric and attach this to the back of the board.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhroLy_nVgFCxMbwoDIxGHZS9hywy73tnwEcRJiqg5cyCYVFXwsaCNwPZ-TK0qHTjwwJsCYkabLAvGZN51ITmHla0lR_SdBO0DgyVZbbCd4lsy0sg0UyyeIwEAyVwM485XSgKLOg9iQhkd6/s1600/IMG_7524.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhroLy_nVgFCxMbwoDIxGHZS9hywy73tnwEcRJiqg5cyCYVFXwsaCNwPZ-TK0qHTjwwJsCYkabLAvGZN51ITmHla0lR_SdBO0DgyVZbbCd4lsy0sg0UyyeIwEAyVwM485XSgKLOg9iQhkd6/s320/IMG_7524.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghJ4_YNgaPXLm7QxC2D1fgN90gDWHx3SfY7Ejkudp5qtXbzNXCgwWoJJEdNlvKY-h6SBnZiCrz0LYOGswhyphenhyphenP1QZV82Dmg9hLGpgEza5eIamEK84_y8ggRxwZIhyYqknEOj2vrZn0qGror6/s1600/IMG_7525.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghJ4_YNgaPXLm7QxC2D1fgN90gDWHx3SfY7Ejkudp5qtXbzNXCgwWoJJEdNlvKY-h6SBnZiCrz0LYOGswhyphenhyphenP1QZV82Dmg9hLGpgEza5eIamEK84_y8ggRxwZIhyYqknEOj2vrZn0qGror6/s320/IMG_7525.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next you will need to attach the ribbon or tape you have chosen to make a criss cross effect. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCIw8QnsEf_qIVLBuRpSn97-CD-oxlFiK1opAC_wqIcIo30RReoudrCWmct8S5Bb7CjY8Weoib4MeYzM1BNNh_e26i3JCplHiWqf82B1ytTKxayPfWOYLUCp4tA7AIDgpMuPY-2nJO-dr2/s1600/IMG_7526.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCIw8QnsEf_qIVLBuRpSn97-CD-oxlFiK1opAC_wqIcIo30RReoudrCWmct8S5Bb7CjY8Weoib4MeYzM1BNNh_e26i3JCplHiWqf82B1ytTKxayPfWOYLUCp4tA7AIDgpMuPY-2nJO-dr2/s320/IMG_7526.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Staple the ribbon from one corner to the opposite corner so that you have an X. Mark the middle of each side on the back. Staple the ribbon to the middle of the top and attach this to the middle of the side, then from the middle side to the bottom of the board. Do the same on the opposite side.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLJHB1dZAF4ZbsVwq6FxMEestQ6sglNQ4dRU8c6e00tae0BTVJZgvpUMKMWoXdWGRItE3_l94dFiYZE9mfE3YmVzigp4wnyclkeb9b5OIkSPorA-QKq2uZ0prDT6nfwuJ4srdDruNzRbIB/s1600/IMG_7527.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLJHB1dZAF4ZbsVwq6FxMEestQ6sglNQ4dRU8c6e00tae0BTVJZgvpUMKMWoXdWGRItE3_l94dFiYZE9mfE3YmVzigp4wnyclkeb9b5OIkSPorA-QKq2uZ0prDT6nfwuJ4srdDruNzRbIB/s320/IMG_7527.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmtgfCwLWisHphTUrMqRgKqW86I76fJ1baH5ehRyn0Akgp8Wfg5Jy2Cl2rxbZijvA541KqylnA2Jkvin32ryrdosFfQ3vjv-ulYw1fKu7Wdx1aKpEb6nGmCTkfmNuWj4OlBUYRnwTPQMdw/s1600/IMG_7532.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmtgfCwLWisHphTUrMqRgKqW86I76fJ1baH5ehRyn0Akgp8Wfg5Jy2Cl2rxbZijvA541KqylnA2Jkvin32ryrdosFfQ3vjv-ulYw1fKu7Wdx1aKpEb6nGmCTkfmNuWj4OlBUYRnwTPQMdw/s400/IMG_7532.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next you will need to attach buttons wherever the ribbon crosses over. I used vintage linen buttons but you could use any. I sewed these throught to the back of the board.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS3tP3OKHwtz8pBLsy7YOQyjPplwcbxWZhJ2D5o1W-rpxlqj9xQAcKYj_zlN6gop3nI66gcy41235uTLh3ZqNutRTXIooa__SpyEVB-cfvCvmtsVnunq9chlS0WAdPzSYWZ6gLlCMDdt6s/s1600/IMG_7531.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS3tP3OKHwtz8pBLsy7YOQyjPplwcbxWZhJ2D5o1W-rpxlqj9xQAcKYj_zlN6gop3nI66gcy41235uTLh3ZqNutRTXIooa__SpyEVB-cfvCvmtsVnunq9chlS0WAdPzSYWZ6gLlCMDdt6s/s320/IMG_7531.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you want to hang the board on the wall then mark one third of the way down from the top and staple string or cord to each side. Make sure it is fairly taut.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge2aNVEylyDdoiFvaMuBmObA48Rxj-jwwbA3gsSqk5F6KdcPzI7Ioc424B7YLOHIOXfmUMHP3zL47XxSxW3XcPQ3qQsMEMiT-jEI2WC4_itj0K9l_9oLEo7jlTu6jgjGmGXWfV3PkWfCpO/s1600/IMG_7534.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge2aNVEylyDdoiFvaMuBmObA48Rxj-jwwbA3gsSqk5F6KdcPzI7Ioc424B7YLOHIOXfmUMHP3zL47XxSxW3XcPQ3qQsMEMiT-jEI2WC4_itj0K9l_9oLEo7jlTu6jgjGmGXWfV3PkWfCpO/s320/IMG_7534.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Your board is now ready to hang on the wall!</div>

Rather foolishly I only gave them a cursory look before leaving a bid. Well, I won them but it was obvious someone had just put a load of damaged and stained vintage textiles together. They looked appealing but on close scrutiny nothing was saleable!<br />
<br />
I was really annoyed with myself but, having put several items in the dustbin, I then washed everything else and sorted it all into what I could salvage. The result was lots of lace and embroidered textiles which I have now resolved to upcycle and make into various items (mostly cushions). <br />
<br />
This monogram P was all I could salvage from one piece and, as soon as I made it into a cushion and added it to my website, it sold.<br />

On the front is a Art Nouveau picture of a lady wearing a helmet whilst on the back is written NANCY RECORD and a picture of a rifle and pistol with the Lorraine cross (also known as the Free French Cross) surrounded by thistles. There is also a very tiny signature of F Rasumny on the front.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Upon further investigation I have found out that Felix Rasumny (1869 - 1940) was a Russian engraver who emigrated to France. He trained at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs under masters such as Millet (one of my very favourite artists), Gauthier and Tasset.<br />
<br />
In my ignorance I started my research thinking Nancy Record was a person but Nancy is the former capital of Lorraine and the home of Art Nouveau in north east France. The thistle is the symbol of Lorraine and is a main feature in the coat of arms of Nancy.<br />
<br />
Early Lorraine crosses differed but earlier designs are the same as this one in that the horizontal beams are of equal length and equally spaced. The Lorraine region, because of its location, has hosted many wars and battles. Twice it was annexed by Germanyand when Hitler took control of the region in WWII General de Gaulle chose the Croix de Lorraine as a symbol of resistance against the German advance. This is when it became known as the Free French Cross.<br />
<br />
There was also much fighting in this area during WWI and I rather think this medal dates from then or even earlier.<br />
<br />
This is all I have found out about it but I am fascinated by its origins and wonder if many of these were made and who they were given to. I haven't found any images or reference to another similar one on the internet.OhSoVintagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07130228440172446040noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799860843366885590.post-57532895537655387322015-04-01T14:24:00.000+01:002015-04-01T14:31:59.751+01:00Sew and SewI have been spending quite a lot of time in my sewing room lately. I love it in there; it is quite a small room and my sewing table now overlooks the garden.<br />
<br />
My daughter gets married in less than a month's time and, as she is having a rustic theme for the wedding, I have been sewing lots of hessian items but mainly bunting. I have been sewing lace onto the hessian as well as appliqueing co-ordinating fabrics onto it and stencilling hearts with paint. <br />
<br />

<br />
I worked out that I needed to produce 24 metres and have now done it all! I have also stencilled lengths of hessian for table runners and sewn a ring pillow (which will be attached to their dog's collar as he is the ring bearer!) as well as covering jam jars for night lights.<br />

Hessian is very messy to work with, all those loose fibres so it was good to have a change and sew with some normal fabric. I made this pair of cushions from some very pretty vintage French fabric. I only managed to buy a small piece so this is all I could make from it. They have been added to my website.</div>

When it is cold and wet outside I like nothing better than to go up to my little warm sewing room with a cup of tea, shut the door and sew. Occasionally I turn on Radio 4 but I mostly like to be quiet, with my thoughts and ideas.<br />
<br />
These are some of the things I have made recently.<br />

<br />
Are you like me and hate it when clothes slip off wooden and plastic coat hangers on to the floor? Of course, you can always use the ribbons that are sewn into the shoulders to keep items on the hangers in the shops but these have an awful habit of poking out when you are wearing an item. So....since I love padded coat hangers and I have a lot of old wooden hangers I thought I would save some money and cover these myself rather than buy new ones.<br />
<br />
Here is what you do....<br />
<br />
You will need<br />
<br />
A wooden coat hanger<br />
A piece of fabric 60 cms long by 14 cms wide. (I used a pretty vintage paisley fabric which was once an eiderdown cover)<br />
Polyester wadding, approx the length of your hanger + 4 cms by approx 26 cms (I used the sort that is for lining curtains, the thickest you can buy, which is about £3 a metre)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgJ7VGqDw-hP1o6D5Ln9l-4H53qbk9TMlhtJTVDY-TKQ1GTA-73vsJ3NjdKdx68n7rqpPqH0lsSLbGKfokqso0vh0i12b3hVJLegr29l_6lProh9sEO2LvHNkJa73hjo600NjDNMZ_kxVz/s1600/IMG_6622.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgJ7VGqDw-hP1o6D5Ln9l-4H53qbk9TMlhtJTVDY-TKQ1GTA-73vsJ3NjdKdx68n7rqpPqH0lsSLbGKfokqso0vh0i12b3hVJLegr29l_6lProh9sEO2LvHNkJa73hjo600NjDNMZ_kxVz/s1600/IMG_6622.JPG" height="230" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Fold the polyester wadding around the hanger (cut a hole for the metal hook) enough times to make the required amount of padding. Sew this together by hand, turning in the short ends (this can be very large stitches as they won't show and are only required to keep the padding in place).<br />
<br />
<br />
Fold the fabric in half. widthways, right sides together. Mark where the middle (30 cms ) is with a pin.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8VSFMdJ_UAeAyLMu3Ns5v1pmavZq6InFN60CdR0oedy-hr8WF05n89qP7a9DUG6wYeUg4fr6szSYbpfsqrTsY0LQmvhE2UDvGVa8qjD-Ck9SsNeM2Ceg2Cvp5Kxv9XZVA8HvgCveS8Cpr/s1600/IMG_6619.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8VSFMdJ_UAeAyLMu3Ns5v1pmavZq6InFN60CdR0oedy-hr8WF05n89qP7a9DUG6wYeUg4fr6szSYbpfsqrTsY0LQmvhE2UDvGVa8qjD-Ck9SsNeM2Ceg2Cvp5Kxv9XZVA8HvgCveS8Cpr/s1600/IMG_6619.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Sew both the short edges, up to the middle mark on the long edge and 2 cms from the end on the other long edge. Turn the fabric the right side out.<br />
<br />
Slot the fabric over both the ends. The sewn edge will be on the top edge of the hanger. I have allowed enough fabric for there to be some gathering. Pin the long edge of the fabric which needs to be sewn together and hand sew with small, neat overstitches.<br />
<br />

I can hardly believe it is 18 months since I last wrote a blog post! What was intended to be a short break has materialised into more of a protracted hibernation.<br />
<br />
Originally my blog was for showcasing what I had for sale on my <a href="http://www.ohsovintage.co.uk/">website</a> with bits of my life intertwined with other vintagey things and the occasional recipe. Now I want my blog to have more variety and I would like to feature fashion for the more mature lady as well as all the previous subjects.<br />
<br />
So, for now, wishing you all a very Happy New Year and a wonderful 2015 to follow.<br />

I am one of those women who never clears the basket. I am not going to spend time ironing items that I may or may not ever use or wear again but that I'm not prepared to part with, so they may linger at the TBOTIB for a long while! Goodness knows how long ago it was that my mother found this beautiful antique cloth/bed cover to sell on the website but I wanted to keep. There it was lurking at the bottom all crumpled and forgotten but now hanging as a curtain in one of the bedrooms. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVE6eDXlb8g0EwAs5mV6I8NjIwlt7LW-Xk8Z1qTy4RhQrvhFUHkaGLuMwoJ6G69YwoN0pWhwHSQZQ-3BIfqhi42UcmJXR9hANcyOVfWJ6einjWCmvY1tc3sX8Rqa2lE87a7-uEZ8OcQr0O/s1600/IMG_4466.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVE6eDXlb8g0EwAs5mV6I8NjIwlt7LW-Xk8Z1qTy4RhQrvhFUHkaGLuMwoJ6G69YwoN0pWhwHSQZQ-3BIfqhi42UcmJXR9hANcyOVfWJ6einjWCmvY1tc3sX8Rqa2lE87a7-uEZ8OcQr0O/s640/IMG_4466.JPG" height="640" width="572" /></a></div>
<br />
This room was my office until I bought this single bed which we didn't need but I just had to have, so it had to go in the smallest room which is now another spare room and my sewing room. I also resurrected a ginger coloured wood (my pet hate) curtain pole which we had taken down, painted it with grey emulsion (Dulux worked perfectly well) and waxed it. I have never used clips before but these are great for no sewing and I just folded over the top deep hem to create a 'ruffled' top. Hey presto, a complete new window makeover all for the price of the clips.<br />
<br />
(I also found a pair of white linen trousers I'd forgotten about but, sad to say, I must have been considerably lighter when they first went into the TBOTIB). <br />
<br />
Have you ever found something you'd forgotten about in the ironing pile?OhSoVintagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07130228440172446040noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799860843366885590.post-20784986312395581612013-05-04T14:09:00.002+01:002013-05-06T18:57:29.642+01:00The 8th of May is Flora Day<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/LomG8vzZS0A" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
On Wednesday it will be <a href="http://www.helstonfloraday.org.uk/">Flora Day in Helston</a> where I used to live. This dancing through the streets dates back to medieval times and serves to celebrate the passing of winter and arrival of Spring. The early morning dance starts at 7 am and the sound of the big bass drum never ceased to excite me all the years I watched and danced on this day. The children's dance is lovely to watch with all the children dressed in white and different head-dresses according to their school. Our daughter danced one year and spent the whole time with a cross look on her face as, with a surname beginning with T, there were no boys left to dance with and she had to dance with another girl!<br />
<br />
The midday dance is spectacular with the men in top hats and tails and the ladies dressed in all their finery. It is a huge privilege to be invited to lead the dance and one has to have been born in Helston to be entitled to do this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK7yUWLsVn9qxWtovFi_YrOznigEw2QTFQ2N4k8qqGiDkpAkfLifXmodTjV2v5X_H8fRHwaS9TN3H9vNDV5xQmBy9X4eWeqPOXvQfNGMLQtjQQfJw-2XI42IQpN8qYOUlgqwMj0Mux4sp-/s1600/IMG_4166-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK7yUWLsVn9qxWtovFi_YrOznigEw2QTFQ2N4k8qqGiDkpAkfLifXmodTjV2v5X_H8fRHwaS9TN3H9vNDV5xQmBy9X4eWeqPOXvQfNGMLQtjQQfJw-2XI42IQpN8qYOUlgqwMj0Mux4sp-/s400/IMG_4166-001.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
All the dancers wear Lily of the Valley and the shops and houses are decorated with bluebells and greenery.<br />
I won't be there this year but every Flora Day my heart is there dancing along to the oh so familiar tune. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha4x4kVqvuzH1ykkePEQ0uZ-68KIW4x5heCbqblBzoxbRb_HE0tOSEcgYtrfqGwAe-SP_7aSLshO9AnYvqgUaXtEvB6eEuC9hQWDCIoUJ6Hlm5fXayj0yMRra5qT3okdbDiBYb6OgjdJFd/s1600/IMG_4160.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha4x4kVqvuzH1ykkePEQ0uZ-68KIW4x5heCbqblBzoxbRb_HE0tOSEcgYtrfqGwAe-SP_7aSLshO9AnYvqgUaXtEvB6eEuC9hQWDCIoUJ6Hlm5fXayj0yMRra5qT3okdbDiBYb6OgjdJFd/s400/IMG_4160.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
If you have never heard of Flora Day you may remember Terry Wogan had a hit with 'The Floral Dance' in 1977 and the Brighouse and Rastrick Band in 1976. Katie Moss wrote the lyrics and music 'founded on an old Cornish air' (as stated on this pamphlet cover) whilst travelling home on the train after an incident which happened whilst visiting Helston on Flora Day in 1911. Apparently she was watching the couples dancing and felt very envious, then a young man came along and swept her off her feet.<br />
<br />
Having mentioned bluebells I will include this wonderful photo on Pinterest of Micheldever Wood not too far from where I now live. I bet the scent here is divine!<br />

I wanted to share this with you; I hope you love it as much as I do.<br />
<br />
A long time friend of mine's 19 year old daughter has just commenced chemotherapy and put this on her blog diary. (The poem ends where she says 'You really ought to meet my mother' which is almost 4 minutes).<br />

Think this photo should have the saying 'Live life as if someone left the gate open'! As you can see Henry is growing and enjoying life!<br />

It's either too blooming cold or now a wet weekend. I've not really tried planting seeds before but am pleased with my efforts at growing Coriander, <br />

<br />
Well, I did find some of the things on my wish list and am very pleased with everything I bought today. I often find that I buy a lot from just one stallholder and today I found four eiderdowns (including a matching pair) and two trugs from the same man. (A certain little dog decided to pose in the photo too!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglJQvtJVAOqon8xDiRsVFErLYz6j0_7oQ0Qba05LQB-Ersu1NH8PMhyPLvHdqnAUInsLcH-t302T0z7ykMYrodQWamg1u-lG-1wYRkBUf4chdfuRJxMg23hYLoyOOplcttwgPyKwtqzetk/s1600/IMG_3932-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglJQvtJVAOqon8xDiRsVFErLYz6j0_7oQ0Qba05LQB-Ersu1NH8PMhyPLvHdqnAUInsLcH-t302T0z7ykMYrodQWamg1u-lG-1wYRkBUf4chdfuRJxMg23hYLoyOOplcttwgPyKwtqzetk/s400/IMG_3932-001.JPG" height="386" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I often have French trugs for sale so have bought a Sussex trug; this one has seen lots of use and I often wonder what the previous gardener grew - were they a vegetable or flower grower? The other trug was used to display one dozen Heinz Cream of Celery soup tins.<br />
<br />
Soda syphons seem to be having a resurgence in popularity and I particularly like this one. I would love to have found a blue one but didn't see any at all.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvPaa3709jqOLirMBvIocAgOQb2BBT9ekW-DMeDURYg_g-OMqM-z1aSOcDgArixyUcj5-ov-IRdkNC0e3LzBXhv8-RDwc0mbdCv68ZgfKOoyPqOtA0QiCz7Tv2C1JSrkcsWBc-xAzOvFu5/s1600/IMG_3938.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvPaa3709jqOLirMBvIocAgOQb2BBT9ekW-DMeDURYg_g-OMqM-z1aSOcDgArixyUcj5-ov-IRdkNC0e3LzBXhv8-RDwc0mbdCv68ZgfKOoyPqOtA0QiCz7Tv2C1JSrkcsWBc-xAzOvFu5/s400/IMG_3938.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I shall keep this mould myself. I was told it is a blancmange mould but I think it may be a curd or cream cheese mould. There is the shape of a pineapple in the base, though, suggesting a sweet rather than savoury use. Maybe you know..... Apparently an embossed pineapple was a sign of welcome.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Other items I bought were a shopping basket (how did they get all their shopping into a basket this size?), a butter stamp, a barkcloth curtain, two guest towels and 2 metres of Hungarian grain sacking.<br />
<br />

<br />
However, the piece de resistance has got to be this bed which has yet to be assembled so I am only showing the foot and headboards. Once I saw it I just had to have it; I just love it. I shall put it either in the loft bedroom (which has yet to be decorated and cleared of all my Oh So Vintage 'stuff' and cardboard boxes etc. or I may put it in the summerhouse to be used as a day bed.<br />

I hope if you have attended an antiques fair today, either as a buyer or seller that you have had a very successful day.<br />

I have a bit of a thing about new books; I love the smell of the new paper and being the first person to open its pages! Also the last time I borrowed a book (many years ago before you could renew on line) I was annoyed to pay out more in a fine than the book would have cost me to buy! But having bought so many books, perhaps not enjoyed or even read some of them before donating them to a charity shop I decided to join the library on line. I hadn't realised you can reserve any book for 50p and now you can even take out magazines on loan (though these are restricted to a 7 day loan).<br />
<br />
This is what I have borrowed today all for the princely sum of 50p<br />

The subject matter is so vast that most people had narrowed it down to posters with a particular theme. We had railway posters, travel posters, suffragette posters and the most popular of all time posters. I have picked out a few that I think are particularly interesting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS-5Dz5dkAvNBqxP6J5Ox0ZE2nQIE2djZ_K4auFS__6lOBvVvOgaA" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS-5Dz5dkAvNBqxP6J5Ox0ZE2nQIE2djZ_K4auFS__6lOBvVvOgaA" width="292" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This was the original Pears Soap poster and the painting 'Bubbles' by 19th century artist John Millais was used.<br />
<br />
I hadn't realised that objectors to the suffragette movement had produced so many awful and damning posters. Take these two for example<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTRcOUxztXRIcwuSJCazIckIREyAkzz1zrEHOBxtL-YwYk0B3Nu" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTRcOUxztXRIcwuSJCazIckIREyAkzz1zrEHOBxtL-YwYk0B3Nu" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTuH7bbQ3eC--8CirzUIR1pUXh6jrSWkYnIqBDxllO1wTosmRw9" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTuH7bbQ3eC--8CirzUIR1pUXh6jrSWkYnIqBDxllO1wTosmRw9" width="258" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The following posters are iconic and surely familiar to all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For my art group meeting tomorrow we have been studying Poster Art. I have decided to concentrate on wartime recruitment posters . The one above is the most well known one and certainly the most copied. It first appeared as the cover illustration for the magazine <i>London Opinion </i>on 5 September 1914. It depicts Lord Kitchener, then British Secretary of State for War. This image was quickly reproduced in poster size and was seen everywhere appealing for recruits into the Army.<br />
<br />
There were a lot of posters encouraging young women to join the Women's Land Army.<br />

'We Can Do It' is not, in fact, a recruitment poster but an American propaganda poster produced in 1943 used as an inspirational image to boost worker morale and encourage existing workers to work harder!. It was actually seen very little during the war but rediscovered in the early 1980s and widely produced in many forms, particularly to promote feminism. The poster certainly packs a punch, so to speak!OhSoVintagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07130228440172446040noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-799860843366885590.post-78697312113118347962013-03-09T15:32:00.000+00:002014-12-28T20:38:24.319+00:00Spring gardeningI expect many of you, like me, have welcomed this warmer weather and the opportunity to get out into the garden this weekend. Henry is still too young to be taken out for walks so I am pleased that he can get into our garden and have a run around. Isn't he growing?<br />

<br />
I was lucky enough to win a £100 voucher from <a href="http://www.noanoabailgate.co.uk/">Noa Noa Lincoln</a> recently and chose this dress which is absolutely gorgeous, I was so pleased with my choice.<br />

The fabric reminds me of a Liberty print and I also love the pink tucked waist band and lace on the hem.<br />

<br />
I have always liked Noa Noa clothes. Unfortunately we don't live near a branch so most of my purchases have been by mail order but I have never been disappointed and never had to send anything back. Here are just a few of my purchases.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The first item I ever bought was this weekend bag which I still love and has been greatly admired on its travels. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6UhF28ofGcmiJySiR2T8IYfXQ8ILg85t9UusbP9lHz43Thyphenhyphenv9iHVhB8KpZe9Yl3PRcx-CRwakcG_mAHq1soE2T84ICxNa7pf8J0iONcOO29nDzWc329eY8sU1xdrMOq_pZC5EM3VUgO5u/s1600/IMG_3808.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6UhF28ofGcmiJySiR2T8IYfXQ8ILg85t9UusbP9lHz43Thyphenhyphenv9iHVhB8KpZe9Yl3PRcx-CRwakcG_mAHq1soE2T84ICxNa7pf8J0iONcOO29nDzWc329eY8sU1xdrMOq_pZC5EM3VUgO5u/s400/IMG_3808.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I still like this quilted top but, alas, it is too small for me now (or rather I am too big for it!) I bought the matching belt and added a silver clasp.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This jacket is so pretty too and I have teamed it with the Noa Noa necklace/collar I recently bought in their sale.<br />
<br />

<br />
Lastly is this dress which is still available on Noa Noa websites. I have worn it a lot, it is so comfortable (when you get to my age then this is an important element!) and can be dressed up or down, so very versatile.<br />

(Please note that this is not a sponsored post, Noa Noa have no idea I am writing this, nor were they aware that I am a fan when I won the voucher.)<br />

<br />
<br />
This year I hit a milestone birthday which used to be known as when a woman started receiving the 'old age' pension. OLD AGE! Good grief!!<br />
<br />
I don't like getting older; some people embrace it but the fact that I am going to be 60 fills me with horror! Okay, I know it's better than the alternative and the longer you live the more birthdays you have (or is it the other way round?) but it hardly seems long ago that I was feeling this way about my 30th birthday. I think I have skipped a couple of decades somewhere along the line and my 40s seem a bit of a blur to be honest. I just can't believe I have been on this earth for 6 whole decades!<br />
<br />
There are some advantages to being older though I can't think of many! Oh yes, car insurance is cheaper! Don't get me wrong, I have a great life and feel blessed to have good health and a lovely family and friends but I just don't want to be 60! I want to stay at 59.<br />
<br />
Actually the whole point of writing this post is about healthy eating and looking after oneself. Over the years I have reached a weight I am not comfortable with and want to lose 1.5 stones before my birthday in October. I can't do anything about the wrinkles or the grey hair (other than hide it with hair colour) but I can have control over my weight. I want to look in the mirror on October 28th and know that I look as good as I can for a 60 year old. I've never really had a weight problem until 'middle age spread' well, it spread! I've always considered that I ate healthily too but I have been following a regime from a personal trainer who advocates eating no processed food and no diet 'crap' (as he puts it). I have been doing this for 4 weeks now and love it because I can eat real food (butter, full fat greek yoghurt, olive oil etc. etc.) and still lose weight. I feel great and the weight is coming off (though slowly I have to admit). I always used to skip breakfast maintaining that it made me feel even hungrier rather than satisfied but now I have porridge with fruit and honey or greek yoghurt and granola. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlRPq3Djf6OkB3Z-rJqWXZ3cuSLzrO4KvUJWf9GvwrgBybsSWA760gnKJ1JrREqPBBq1MdBQhWw3_hiMHuBT3ORww1n2_5nmt8d41Bx4iwJQNZrZHy6TdH-TlN-AuXH_wm_ftArOVpE1f7/s1600/IMG_3788.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlRPq3Djf6OkB3Z-rJqWXZ3cuSLzrO4KvUJWf9GvwrgBybsSWA760gnKJ1JrREqPBBq1MdBQhWw3_hiMHuBT3ORww1n2_5nmt8d41Bx4iwJQNZrZHy6TdH-TlN-AuXH_wm_ftArOVpE1f7/s320/IMG_3788.JPG" width="301" /></a></div>
<br />
I have never made granola before but this is the recipe I use -<br />
<br />
300 ml apple juice<br />
150g oats<br />
150g sultanas<br />
Pecan nuts (as many as you want)<br />
<br />
Heat the apple juice till it thickens slightly into a syrup. Mix in the dry ingredients, spread this onto a baking sheet and bake until crispy. (I found this did take quite a while and I had to separate it into small bits).<br />
<br />

I have a board on Pinterest featuring <strike>older</strike> more mature ladies. This lady caught my eye, not just because we have the same name but can you believe she is 101!<br />

Does your age bother you or are you quite content with your advancing years?
