Christmas Cake

This year one of my friends has made her Christmas cake from one of those Waitrose Delia's packs where everything is included for you and even the dried fruit has been pre-soaked in booze.  I have always (and probably always will) made my cake from the recipe my mother used as her mother did and goodness knows how far back into the family it goes.

The rather tatty and cake mixture splattered recipe that I wrote out 34 years ago when we were first married is slavishly followed every year.  I have never ever iced a cake in my life as we always have a rich Dundee cake and it must be served with Wensleydale cheese!

The cake is in the oven now (minus quite a few spoonfuls of the mixture as I adore raw cake mixture) and it smells delicious!

Do you buy your cake or do you have a favourite family recipe?

  1. Minus a few spoonfuls of cake mixture? I don't believe that, minus an entire extra cake's worth I bet ;) It's looking good, and getting me excited for Christmas!

  2. To my shame I've bought a small un-iced one this year, and will decorate it myself. Nobody else likes Christmas cake in our house, and I always end up eating most of it myself! I love marzipan!

  4. Your cake will be delicious, and I agree that a chunk of Wensleydale would be perfect with it!
My aunts Christmas cake is the best I have ever tasted, so she makes one for me every year. I am sure if she gave me the recipe, it would not taste as good, so am happy to receive it all ready to eat!

  5. What a cake! I have my Mum's recipe although I have yet to make a Christmas cake. Every year all good intentions fall by the wayside! We love raw cake mixture too, one has the whisk the other the bowl! x
