Baking Cupboard

Having seen this wonderful larder/pantry in a John Lewis of Hungerford store this week I came home and decided to re-arrange the old linen cupboard I have in my kitchen into a baking cupboard.

Following on from that I then decided to make some Cranberry & Apple Chutney and Chilli Jam (both courtesy of Nigella's Christmas).  I intend to give some homemade edible presents at Christmas so these were a practice run to see what they were like.  I also made some linen labels to attach to the jars.

  1. What wonderful gifts! I love the labels - I still have more experimenting with printing methods to do for printing vintage style graphics, looks like you've already got it off to fine art!
Thanks for visiting and for your comment - I'm off to explore your blog and online shop now!

  2. You have some really lovely things in your online shop,I can see we have similar tastes! It gave me quite a jolt to see your mangle cloth hearts - I have recently finished making a whole load of similar ones for some upcoming Xmas Fairs! Love the ticking cushions too!

  3. Me again! I forgot to ask - did you use the ironing fabric onto freezer paper method to print your labels, or another way? Yours have come out lovely and clear.

    1. Hi Gilly
I replied to this on your blog but it doesn't seem to have published. Maybe it needs blogger approval from you. Let me know if you haven't received it and I will try again - it was a long reply!

  7. Hi Ruth, thanks for your comment on mine! It's interesting to hear your method, the results look fantastic and no expensive paper required! Good for you! I will try yours.

I have tried various methods briefly but as am on schedule for fairs (first one next sat) I have stuck with only doing small items and using special transfer paper - the results are great if you don't look too closely, but close up you can see the sheen from the background paper so it doesnt look good for a larger item like a full size cushion - i know as I've tried it.

So I dont have time at the moment to experiment fully, but I have seen a method using a special cleaning product - Citrasolv - which I have bought but havent had time to try. Have a look on the Graphics Fairy blogspot for wonderful graphics (you probably have already found it) and for various other transfer methods including the citrasolv method.

I'd like to have a go printing on hessian - I have only used stamps on hessian so far, although I have made some cushions from old coffee sacks already printed.

Sorry about all the comments! But it's so nice when you find someone with similar tastes!

  8. I love the pantry cupboard though Mr N says I already have too much red in the kitchen - I was pleased to note that the wonderful retro kitchen at Scotney has lovely red pieces too.

  9. I have a lovely larder cupboard which started life as a cupboard for coats, in an arts and craft house! ILife your cupboard, much tidier than mine! :)

  10. Hi Ruth,

Beautiful photos as always. I have a similar oak larder cupboard in my kitchen, but it is overflowing with tupperware pots, pasta and cereals so not nearly so photogenic.

I've also recently made Nigella's cranberry and apple chutney and chilli jam with the excesses from our garden and greenhouse. Every year I grow chillies, then end up with a glut, and then complain about making chilli jam (I'm accident prone when preserving)! One day I will learn not to plant it unless I want to pickle it! Still, we love the chilli jam on winter greens and cabbages, so it's worth it in the end.
