Books

Well, that's the first New Year's Resolution broken! 'Blog more' wasn't exactly top of my list but the first week of January has passed and not a single post from me! Let's hope I have more success with another resolution when I return to Slimming World tomorrow to shed the Christmas pounds.

A lot of you fellow vintage bloggers out there will probably have some of these books. I absolutely love the ones published by Ryland, Peters & Small and was snuggled under my new duvet this morning looking at them after everyone had gone to work.

One of the best books I have ever had and which I find invaluable when sourcing kitchenalia is Miller's Collecting Kitchenware which I think is now out of print as it was published in 1995.

This is a picture of Elizabeth David's kitchen from the book.

I have ordered another book on Kitchenalia and eagerly await its arrival.

Whilst on the subject of books do read 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' by the same author as 'The Kite Runner'. I thoroughly enjoyed both, couldn't put them down, and am looking forward to seeing the film of the latter later this week.

I found a packet of very out of date cranberries lurking at the back of my 'baking' cupboard at the weekend and since I hate throwing food away I threaded them onto some florist's wire and shaped them into a heart. I am rather pleased with the result!

As an afterthought.... please can someone tell me how to make my photos 'enlargeable' and why does the font change size on my posts? I would appreciate some advice. Thankyou.

  1. Hello Mummy,
I can help you with both of those things at the end of your blog when I come home on Friday night. The first one is tricky, the second is easy- just upload your photographs to Photobucket/Flickr etc, and then click on them to enlarge them once they're uploaded onto the site. Once you have the big version up on your screen right click on the image and click properties. Then copy the address into the clipboard. Upload the photo onto Blogger and then when you've got it into the editing section highlight the picture and click on the hyperlink tool. Paste the address to the photo on photobucket into there. When people click on the image it will bring up your large version. I can give you more help on this when I come home on Friday.
Work is a bit boring, off swimming tonight with Fleur and then a quiet night in.
    Hope all's well

  3. Hi Ruth, yes I have pretty much the same books as you! Thansk for the reading recommendations.

Great idea for the cranberries by the way!!

I find it easier to compose my blog in the html mode - it's very easy to accidentally delete part of the code around the photos so if you can see the code then it's less likely to happen. You can alter the size of text by selecting the size on the bar above the text box. Hope that makes some sense!!

  6. Ruth, I have got a passion for books too, although I hardly ever sit down and look through them from cover to cover, athough they are useful when I need hints and tips, and I will always keep them to hand. I have got Millers Collectibles books dating from 1989-90 although I stopped buying them in 2005 because of lack of shelf space! What I have got though are handy for reference, if I am lucky enough to ever find anything these days? x

  8. Hi Ruth, lovely books - I have some of those too. I don't know about anyone else, but I only ever look at the pictures, rarely bother to read the text! What a great idea with the cranberries, I might have a go at that too!
    Have a good weekend,
    best wishes,

  9. I liked the pile of books but was hoping to find some novel recommendations! lol have you started Crime & Punishment yet, i haven't... well i'm a quarter through as you know but i haven't picked it up yet.

I got lost on Rosie's instructions after the word Photobucket. Mine are enlargeable by default - i have absolutely no idea how i did it.

  10. What a wonderful idea using those dried cranberries! And I just LOVE kitchenalia books! I will have to try to source the one you mentioned which is out of print. Hubby and I run the family's cookshop business, and we're often asked to hunt down old kitchen gadgets that customers remember their "grandmothers" using. These books always come in handy (plus they are wonderful to read)!

  13. Hello Ruth
Sorry I haven't been by for a while..
Did you ever see the T.V drama about Elizabeth David.. it was v interesting but very sad too...?
    I hope they repeat it!
I have just finished the Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns..and they are by far the best books I have read for a very long time.. I was constantly in tears.. very moving stories.. not sure I could cope with the film but I have heard that it is very true to the book..
Hope all is well with you..
Have you been to Coverack recently??
    Love
